In “Little Scarlet the idea of true friendship appear though several pages within the story. We can notice this in the scene where Rawling and Suggs met for the first time. “He held out a hand. I look at it not many policemen had offered to shake hands with me. Outstretched hands of the law held wooden batons and pistols, handcuffs and warrants but rarely a welcome and never an offer of equality” (Mosley, 6). With the word phrase “true friendship” we can understand that it involves action by doing something for others while expecting nothing in return from them; also, it involves thoughts and feelings without terror of judgment or negative criticism. This passage could be connect to the later where Rawling was a little mad at sugg because of the way he refers about black people “I don’t like to be called boy, I said. I don’t like our Negro women to be called girls. That’s easy enough right? It is clear that despite their difference races they were wild open to communicate without fear. In addition, they pretty much seem that despite their different point of view they still like each other that I believe is an important part of a good relationship. In other words I noticed that they were available to forgive one another.
